What is the SIELE?

The International Spanish Language Evaluation Service (SIELE) is a new testing and certification service for Spanish lead by the Cervantes Institute (CI), the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) and the University of Salamanca.

Starting in 2016, the service will be offered through Telfónica Educación Digital, a technology and marketing company selected through a competitive bidding process.

The SIELE is a proficiency exam that certifies Spanish language competency levels. It works on a point scale system equivalent to levels A1, A2, B1, B2, and C1 set by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR)

The SIELE is a high-quality international, digital, adaptable, and quick system.

It is digital because it is managed completely electronically. Registration, test taking, exam results, and certification are all carried out online.

It is flexible according to the needs of the user. Each candidate may choose between a complete Exam Certificate in Spanish or an individual Skills Report of the five competency areas (Reading, Writing, Listening, Speaking).

It is quick because Certificate or Report results are received within a three-week time, and also because it works within an appointment system with the SIELE exam centers.

It is international because, as it is coordinated from both Mexico and Spain, it incorporates the academically recognized variants across the Spanish linguistic maps. Each SIELE exam is required to combine a minimum of three different variants in Spanish.

It is high-quality because it is endorsed by a number of prestigious institutions such as IC, UNAM and USAL, who guarantee the highest quality of standards and best practices not only in exam processes, but also in administration, assistance, and in result notification.
