Salamanca is situated in the midwest of Spain and belongs to the region of Castilla y León. It is 200 km from Madrid and 100 km from Portugal. It is well-known for its lively day and young night atmosphere. Always full of national and international students, Salamanca is the Spanish university town par excellence.
The local population is about 150,000 inhabitants. Salamanca owns a marvellous artistic-historical monumental group. As a student town, a highlight of Salamanca is its prestigious University, which is the oldest in Spain and one of the oldest universities in Europe. Salamanca was declared "World Heritage City" by the UNESCO. In 2002 it was also chosen to be "European Capital of Culture".
At 800 meters above sea level, Salamanca has cold winters and hot summers.
